Come Grow With Us!

Pastor's Study

By the group who brought us
MODERN PARABLES

Many of you enjoyed the six-week DVD study Modern Parables that Pastor David led last fall and last winter. This fall we will offer more DVD studies from the same group (which is called Nooma®). Here is their description of these videos.

Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now, and anybody can be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to question, to wrestle with the implications of what he was saying and doing. He inspired, challenged, provoked, comforted, and invited people to be open to God’s work in this world. Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in.

Here is the schedule (each session is Sunday evening 7:00-8:00 p.m., and child care can be arranged). If you can make some of the sessions but not all of them, that’s OK. Registration starts on Sunday, September 11. The first three sessions will be held at Parke Memorial UMC and the last three at Maryland Line UMC.

Sept. 18 "Trees" We want to know why we are here.  If our lives really matter.  How our religion is relevant to this life.  Today.  We want to understand why everything we think, everything we say, and everything we do matters.  Why?  Because we want our lives to have meaning today.

Sept. 25

"Sunday"

Why do we do the things we do?  Why do we go to church or give money away?  We're tired of all the empty rituals and routines.  And so is God.  God wants our hearts.

"Noise"

Why is silence so hard to deal with?  We're constantly surrounded by "voices" that are influencing us on how to think, feel, and behave.  Maybe there's a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God.

Oct. 23

"Kickball"

We always think we know what's missing from our lives in order to really make us happy, don't we?  If I only had that (fill in the blank).  When God doesn't deliver things we've asked for right away, we start questioning whether God really understands or even cares.  But what if...?

Oct. 30

"Luggage"

Maybe a friend turned their back on you.  Maybe someone you love betrayed you.  We all have wounds, and we often consider revenge.  But does revenge ever truly satisfy?  God didn't create you to carry these wounds around.  God created you to be free.
